Ethical Travel and International Volunteering

An experience that goes beyond travel

The programs offered by Messaggeri di Pace combine volunteering, cultural discovery, and historical depth, providing participants with an authentic and transformative experience.

Alongside community support activities, these journeys offer the opportunity to explore territories of extraordinary historical, cultural, and natural richness—places that are often excluded from traditional tourism routes.

Among the possible travel experiences

  • visits to rural villages, agricultural communities, and local markets

  • discovery of rivers, lakes, and natural landscapes in south-east Nigeria

  • meetings with schools, churches, hospitals and community centers

  • participation in traditional ceremonies such as the Owu Festival and Iri-Ji (New Yam Festival)

  • exploration of lesser-known historical sites, such as the ancient Amanfo Kingdom in Awoomamma, home to the castle of King Duruokpalanne Kevin Amanfo (1864–1947), a cultural landmark and a symbol of unity, peace, and identity for the entire Igbo community

For those interested in anthropological, cultural, and social studies, these territories represent a living heritage, still deeply connected to the traditions and history of West Africa.

International volunteering: areas of engagement

The ethical travel programs of Messaggeri di Pace offer opportunities for involvement in different fields, depending on participants' skills, availability, and interests.

Possible volunteering and exchange paths include:

  • education and teaching (school support, educational activities, cultural exchange)

  • healthcare and social support, in collaboration with local facilities

  • agriculture and sustainable production, working alongside rural communities

  • arts and crafts (handicrafts, carpentry, creative activities)

  • research, documentation, and storytelling (photography, writing, oral histories)

  • environment and territory, through awareness-raising and environmental protection activities

Experiences can vary in length — from one week to one month or more — and are designed to accommodate both individual volunteers and small groups.

Responsible tourism rooted in respect

In a continent often portrayed through stereotypes, Messaggeri di Pace proposes a different way of traveling:
a form of responsible tourism that does not consume places, but listens to them;
that does not simplify cultures, but respects them;
that does not separate travel from commitment, but holds them together.
